From a Kitchen Table to a Team of Four
On 1 September 2026, Clever Duck Insurance Advice turns SIX!
August 2020 seems like another universe now. I had spent three years at a large financial services company, and then found myself stuck at home during a pandemic. So I decided to take the plunge and leave to start my own business.
It sounds very brave and entrepreneurial when I put it like that. But in reality, I was sitting at home in my kitchen, during a lockdown, cold-calling people about life insurance. Glamorous, I know. 🙈
But ever since then, that little business has been growing.
The human element
I started Clever Duck because I wanted to make insurance advice accessible and straightforward. I knew I could search the market, explain the options in plain English, and take away most of the hassle.
I also wanted to make it human, and that's what ended up bringing it all to life. Over the last six years, I've had conversations about new babies, houses, marriages, divorces, grief, new businesses, and career changes. I've come to see it as a great privilege to hear about the highest and lowest points in so many lives.
And then there were four!
The biggest change has been the evolution of Clever Duck, from one lonesome duck, into a little flock. We've recently welcomed our fourth team member, Megan. 🦆🦆🦆🦆
If you'd told me this back in 2020 when I was cold-calling from my kitchen, I think I would have laughed. That version of me was concentrating on getting through the next week. But I think she'd be astonished and thrilled at how things turned out. 😁
Building a team feels like a completely different milestone to winning a new client or writing a new policy. It means creating something that is bigger than one person. It means being able to help more people, and develop the business, without losing the personal service that Clever Duck was built on.
From one client at a time to 350+
A business doesn't get to six years because of one person. We are here today because more than 350 clients have chosen us to help them protect something important to them. Thank you. ❤️
